PTFE-lined steel pipes with flared ends

PTFE-lined steel pipes for the most aggressive media.

The strength of steel on the outside, the chemical resistance of PTFE on the inside. We design, install and maintain PTFE-lined piping with flared ends for chemical and pharma plants in the Basel region.

Services · PTFE lining

Who it is for

PTFE-lined lines are the solution when even Hastelloy reaches its limits or when cost-effectiveness requires it:

01

Chemical

hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, chlorine, bromine, alkalis and solvents in high concentration.

02

Pharma and fine chemicals

product lines where no metal contact is permitted.

03

Waste water and waste gas treatment

neutralisation, scrubbers, acid recovery.

Piping in a chemical plant

Construction and method

A PTFE-lined pipe consists of a steel pipe (carbon steel or stainless steel), which takes the pressure, and a PTFE liner, which carries the medium. At the ends the liner is flared over the flange, so that the sealing face is also made of PTFE and the medium never comes into contact with steel.

Because the liner is not welded, a PTFE line is made up of prefabricated pipe sections, elbows, tees and reducers that are joined by flanges. Our job is to design these flange runs, the exact dimensional chain, installation with the correct tightening torques, and the leak test. On the steel side we weld pipe supports, connections and transitions to metallic sections.

Limits of the system: temperature and vacuum. We check with you whether standard PTFE, antistatic PTFE or a vacuum-resistant liner is needed.

Step by step

How we work

  1. Step 01

    Clarification

medium, temperature, pressure, vacuum, antistatic requirement.

  2. Step 02

    Design of the flange run

isometric with every pipe section and every gasket, dimensional chain, make-up pieces.

  3. Step 03

    Procurement

lined pipe sections and fittings from the manufacturer, with certificate.

  4. Step 04

    Installation

aligning, tightening according to the torque table, retightening as specified.

  5. Step 05

    Leak test and handover

    test report, marking, documentation.

  6. Step 06

    Maintenance

replacement of individual pieces, gasket changes, extension.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is PTFE lining better than Hastelloy?

For media that also attack nickel-based alloys, such as hydrofluoric acid or hot hydrochloric acid, and when cost-effectiveness matters: a lined carbon steel pipe is often considerably cheaper than a solid pipe in a special alloy.

Can PTFE-lined pipes be welded?

Not the liner. The line is built up from prefabricated, flared pipe sections with flanges. On the steel side we weld pipe supports, connections and transitions.

How are the flanges made leak-tight?

The flared PTFE liner itself forms the sealing face. What matters is the correct tightening torque, even tightening in a crosswise sequence, and retightening according to the manufacturer's instructions. With us, that is part of the installation.

What temperatures can PTFE withstand?

That depends on the liner, the pressure and the medium. The limits are set by the manufacturer's data sheet; we check them with you before the material is chosen.
